The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) is committed to a “green first” approach to improving water quality affected by storm water runoff. Green infrastructure (GI) can be a cost-effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly way to manage the volume, rate and water quality of storm water runoff while providing many additional benefits to communities. That said, as time goes by and populations grow, we see more and more Green initiatives cropping up. Such is the case with The Pittsburgh Sewer Authority. There is a “greening’ trend in Pittsburgh and other municipalities creating a form of outreach for better environmental quality. Recently, The Sewer Authority contributed funding for a 2,000-square-foot “green roof” atop the historic Paramount Film Exchange building in Uptown will capture at least 60,000 gallons of storm water runoff that would otherwise contribute to sewage overflow.
It doesn’t stop there for charitable causes. The sewer authority recently announced 17 grants totaling $250,000 for green infrastructure projects like these in neighborhoods throughout the city. Seven matching grants, each from $8,000 to $40,000, will support larger-scale projects to manage storm water, while 10 “mini” grants, each up to $5,000, will help various organizations to increase awareness of such efforts. The Pittsburgh Authority anticipates the city’s first-ever green infrastructure grant program will help reduce up to 4 million gallons of storm water flow each year. GI can create jobs and increase property values through neighborhood revitalization and beautification. GI protects the environment by improving the quality of our water and our air.
